Chapter Ten

After a long walk on the beach, Max and I eat a delicious dinner and then take a blanket out onto the sand. We lie on our backs and watch the sky transform as the sun sets. It’s better than going to the movies.

That night, I have trouble falling asleep. My mind turns to the case, and I keep tossing and turning as I try to work through the clues that I’ve gathered.

The next morning, we eat fruit salad and have coffee out on the patio, and then take a swim. Around eleven, Max decides to go for a run. Though he invites me along, I decline.

I’m itching to get back to my case.

Turkey has been staring at my phone so much since yesterday morning, and I’m dying to know what he’s figured out.

“Hey, Turkey Werky,” I transmit telepathically, as I enter the sitting room and spot him lying in a patch of light, with my phone out in front of him.

He looks up at me and then flops over onto his side, exposing his belly in the way that he does when he wants it rubbed.

“What have you been able to dig up?” I ask, as I walk over to him, squat down, and give him a few gentle pats on the belly.

This causes him to stir. He gives a great big stretch, licks his lips, and then transmits. “I did do quite a bit of research online, but I’m afraid very little of it was fruitful. It seems the Navy was very guarded about the locations of their underwater outpostings, and that trend has continued now that they’re privately owned.”

“Shoot, I was afraid of that,” I say. “That’s exactly what I’ve heard from other sources, too. So what are we going to do about it? Tell me you were out all night, uncovering clues or our next lead.”

He shakes his head. “I mostly slept last night. I think you would do well to get some beauty rest, too. You’re getting married tomorrow, and you don’t want to have dark circles under your eyes on the big day. In addition, being exhausted and stressed isn’t good for our investigative abilities.”

“Yes, but Maria is missing,” I say, as I reach up and feel under my eyes, to see if they’re puffy. Yep, they are. “I can’t relax while she’s out there... somewhere,” I say.

I stand up and start pacing. “We have to do something. We have to try to find her.”

“Calm down,” Turkey says. “Let’s go over our clues again. Though the case does seem to be a bit chaotic at this point, there must be a pattern here, somewhere... some kind of order to it all.”

I reach up and rub my temple. Going over the clues again is about the last thing I feel like doing, but Turkey is right. We need to find a pattern.

“Okay,” I transmit. “Let’s start from the beginning. Maria was last seen going into her apartment on Friday night, by Benny. She was supposed to meet Benny at the airport, but she never turned up.
